Spring fever is upon us. A day trip offers the opportunity to take in sunshine and scenery and of course some wine and food. Creekside Cellars in Evergreen, Colorado, is a worthwhile destination. Creekside Cellars is name to both the winery and Italian café that sits along Bear Creek in the center of town.
The Italian Antipasto Platter is billed as “Not just a meal, it’s a memory.” It offers an enormous assortment of imported cheeses, olives, meats, grilled and marinated vegetables, stuffed peppers, a loaf of ciabatta bread, and trio of dipping sauces and oils. What a feast!
Winemaker Michelle Cleveland has created a broad menu of dry rosé, white, red, and dessert wines that pair well with the vibrant food. Tasting wine by the flight is a great way to experience the different textures of multiple grapes:
Creekside Cellars Petite Sirah 2010 – This densely colored, robust wine complements myriad flavors in the antipasto platter. It was aged in new French oak for 15 months, and that smokiness comes through in the nose and palate.
Creekside Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 – Black fruit greets you in the first sip, and a balanced experience follows, with notes of cherry, tobacco, and caramel that comes from aging in half new French and half new American oak.
Creekside Cellars Merlot – This mellower Bordeaux sibling was smooth and easy-drinking. Think a bowlful of cherries.
Creekside Cellars Cabernet Franc 2010 – This award-winning wine is toasty and rich, with complex layering of flavors, from fruit (red) to nuts (toasted), and a bit of chocolate and even coffee.
Creekside Cellars Robusto 2010 – The best taste was the last! This dense blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot, 7% Malbec, and 3% Petit Verdot packs a punch to savor. It was aged 24 months in Appalachian oak and offers berries, spice, dark-roast coffee, and mineral.
You can purchase wine by the bottle to enjoy at home. To keep your cellar (or closet) stocked, join the Creekside Cellars Wine Club and be privy to special releases all year long.
Until our next adventure in wine and food…
